The desert is calling...
Trips are one of my favorite ways to gather inspiration. After attending a trade show in Las Vegas I spent a few days immersed in the desert. I drove out to the Valley of Fire and spent a morning hiking among red rocks. It was wild to see the landscape change from drab browns and tans to fiery red and vibrant peachy hues.
After this adventure, I met up with a friend and we continued our adventure to Utah's Zion National Park. Zion has been on my bucket list for a while, and I didn't realize just how close it is to Las Vegas. For a few days we hiked around different parts of the park and were even snowed on (it was February after all). Seeing how vast and varied the rock formations could be and the broad views from the tops of hikes reinvigorated my love of the desert.
While our visit was short, I managed to squeeze in a few sketches based off of photos taken on the hikes. But it wasn't until a few months later that I was even able to get started on planning out a new desert inspired embroidery kit.
With this design, I wanted to play with stitches to create different lines and textures. The rugged rock formations of the desert can be hard to capture and I used different stitch angles to bring them to life.
