This August I'm headed down to Waco, Texas to teach four (4) workshops at Paper Crown! I've never been to Texas, let alone Waco before, so I'm exited for the opportunity to share stitching and explore a new (to me) place.


Cindy, the owner of Paper Crown stocks MCreativeJ kits and originally asked me if I would be interested in teaching a workshop on stumpwork. If you're not familiar, stumpwork is a form of hand embroidery that uses wire and padding to create raised, 3D elements. After the two of us got to chatting, we decided on a few stumpwork classes and even more fun crafting options.

Paper Crown Workshops


Indigo Dye Workshop

August 24: Try Indigo Dyeing from 9-11am CST

Explore the magic of indigo dyeing with fiber artist Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ. Learn how to fold and bind fabric to create patterns and designs with indigo dye. You’ll love seeing the dye change colors, and your designs come to life! Each attendee will receive four cotton tea towels to create their own patterns and are also encouraged to bring additional materials to dye. This class can get messy, so please wear clothing you don’t mind getting a little dye on. If you are bringing additional items to dye, please nothing larger than 3ft x3ft.


Stitch a Stumpwork Strawberry

August 24: Stitch a Stumpwork Strawberry from 2-5pm CST

Want to create textural embroidery that pops off the fabric? Join fiber artist and author Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ to learn stumpwork with this delightful strawberry design. Stumpwork is a type of textural embroidery that uses padding and wire to create elements that stand away from the fabric creating 3D elements. In this 3 hour class you’ll learn how to make a sculptural strawberry and leaves that stick out from the fabric. You’ll learn how to stitch the stem stitch, detached chain stitch, berry stitch, couching, long and short satin stitch, button hole stitch, and corded detached buttonhole stitch. All materials are included. This class is best suited for makers that have stitched before, however all are welcome.


August 25: Applique and Embroider a Fabric Landscape from 10-12noon CST

Let’s create collaged landscapes with fabric! Learn how to create your own fabric landscape using applique embroidery with fiber artist Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ. This two-hour, hands-on workshop will cover how to pair fabrics to create your own unique landscapes, basic applique and beginner-friendly embroidery stitches like the running stitch, chain stitch, fly stitch, and French knot. Each participant will receive a full class kit that includes an embroidery hoop, cotton fabrics, full skeins of embroidery thread, embroidery needle, sewing pins, backing materials, and printed instructions.


Stitch a Stumpwork Butterfly

August 25: Stitch a Stumpwork Butterfly from 2-5pm CST

Want to create textural embroidery that pops off the fabric? Join fiber artist and author Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ to learn stumpwork. Stumpwork is a type of textural embroidery that uses padding and wire to create sculptural elements that stand out from the fabric creating 3D elements. In this 3 hour class you’ll learn how to make wire slip butterfly wings. These wings will be moveable and flutter away from the fabric. All materials are included. This class is best suited for makers that have stitched before, however all are welcome.
