March Hand Embroidery Craft Classes and Events
March 2: Floral Embroidery Basics at Sew Expo from 11am-1:30pm PST
Learn to embroider flowers in this hands-on embroidery basics workshop with fiber artist Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ. This two and a half hour class covers a variety of beginner-friendly embroidery stitches like the satin stitch, back stitch, stem stitch, detached chain stitch, leaf stitch, and French knot. Each attendee will receive a full kit that includes a wooden embroidery hoop, floral transfer designs, embroidery needle, full skeins of embroidery thread, a yellow pattern fabric, backing materials, and printed instructions.
March 6: Flower Embroidery for Kids at Picket Fence Art Studio from 5-6:30pm PST
Learn to stitch colorful flowers with fiber artist Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ. This 1.5 hour, hands-on workshop helps new stitchers (ages 12+) get started with embroidery. We'll cover prepping fabric in the hoop, splitting and knotting thread, and threading the needle as well as basic embroidery stitches like the satin stitch, back stitch, and reverse chain stitch. Each attendee will receive a full kit that includes: a wooden embroidery hoop, flower and leaf patterns, an embroidery needle, full skeins of embroidery thread, cotton fabric, and printed instructions.
March 8: Upcycle Your Clothing with Hand Embroidery at Make Apothecary from 2-4pm PST
Cover up stains and small holes in your clothing with hand embroidery. Join fiber artist and author Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ for a hands-on workshop. Simply bring a garment to embroider and we’ll provide you with playful nature-inspired sample designs to stitch. This class will cover helpful dos and don’ts of embroidering garments as well as stitches best suited for your individual garment and pattern. Each attendee will also receive an embroidery hoop, thread, needle, and stabilizer to get started. This workshop is beginner-friendly and no prior embroidery experience is required.
March 9: Intro to Indigo Dyeing at Monster from 1-3pm and 4-6pm PST
Explore the magic of indigo dyeing with fiber artist Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ. Learn how to fold and bind fabric to create patterns and designs with indigo dye. You’ll love seeing the dye change colors, and your designs come to life! Each attendee will receive four cotton tea towels to create their own patterns and are also encouraged to bring additional materials to dye. This class can get messy, so please wear clothing you don’t mind getting a little dye on. If you are bringing additional items to dye they should be made of natural fibers like cotton, linen, silk, or wool, and please nothing larger than 3ft x3ft.
March 12: Vegetable Tote Bag Embroidery at UW Botanic Garden from 6-8pm PST
Learn how to hand embroider your tote bag with vegetable designs perfect for summer farmers market trips. Join fiber artist and author Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ for a 2-hour hands on embroidery workshop. This class will help you get started with hand embroidery and cover beginner-friendly embroidery stitches like the long and short satin stitch, reverse chain stitch, stem stitch, and French knot. You'll be able to choose from a wide variety of thread colors and vegetable patterns to rework your tote bag. Attendees will be provided a tote bag to embroider in class.
March 13: Visible Mending- Woven Mends at Thistle and Poppy from 6:30-8:30pm PST
Does your knitwear or denim have a hole in it? Learn how to patch that hole with visible mending. In this two-hour, hands-on workshop with fiber artist and author Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ, you’ll learn two types of woven mends: darning and buttonhole filling to patch a hole. During class, you’ll learn how to get started with visible mending, different threads and materials to use, and how to mend your specific garment. Mends can be made to look like decorative motifs or matched to the garment. You will need to bring a garment to class to mend. Knitwear and denim are recommended for this workshop. All other materials are provided.
March 15: Needle Lace Flowers at Monster from 1-3pm PST
Want to learn how to create needle lace? Craft delicate flowers and leaves out of a needle and thread. Join fiber artist and author Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ to craft your own needle lace flowers. In this 2-hour, hands on workshop, you’ll create your own flower design, learn how to couch thread, then use the buttonhole stitch to stitch the needle lace into place. You can even add beads if you’d like! This is a beginner-friendly workshop and all materials are included.
March 16: Embroidered Patched for Visible Mending at Wyldwood Creative from 10-12pm PST
Does your denim have a hole in it? Learn how to patch that hole with embroidery! In this two-hour, hands-on workshop with fiber artist and author Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ, you’ll learn how to get started with visible mending patches, different threads and materials to use, and stitches for mending your specific garment. You’ll be able to choose from a variety of threads and nature inspired patterns to create your embroidered patch. You will need to bring a denim garment to class to mend. All other materials are provided.
March 20: Mushroom Embroidery Basics at Monster from 6:30-8:30pm PST
Let’s stitch magical mushrooms! Learn to embroider a playful bunch of fungi in this embroidery workshop with fiber artist Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ. This two hour, hands-on workshop covers a variety of beginner-friendly embroidery stitches such as the satin stitch, back stitch, reverse chain stitch, long and short satin stitch, and French knot. Each attendee will receive a full kit that includes a wooden embroidery hoop, mushroom transfer designs, an embroidery needle, full skeins of embroidery thread, cream cotton fabric, backing materials, and printed instructions.
March 22: Embroidered Photo Frames at Picket Fence Art Studio from 2-4pm PST
Want to create an embroidered photo frame keepsake? Create a personalized hand stitched frame to remember a special memory, location, event, and more. This two-hour hands-on class with Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ will get you started with hand embroidering a photo frame. Each person will be able to choose from a variety of nature inspired patterns and thread colors to create a personalized project. Class will cover hand embroidery stitches such as the satin stitch, split back stitch, stem stitch, and French knot. Frame fits up to a 4x3 photo best. *Photo is an example of what can be created with this class. Designs will vary
March 23: Stitch Colorful Cloud Shoes at Quilting Mayhem from 10:30am-12:30pm PST
Do your shoes need some pizazz? Want to jazz them up with embroidery? Learn how to embroider your canvas shoes with colorful clouds. You can join author and fiber artist Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ for a hands-on, two hour shoe embroidery workshop. In this class, you’ll learn how to get started with shoe embroidery, transfer your design onto shoes, prep your thread, and what tools and stitches are helpful for embroidering on shoes. During the workshop, you’ll be able to choose your own color assortment to create a unique colorful cloud design as well as the satin stitch, long and short satin stitch, and stem stitch. You will need to bring a pair of canvas shoes to class to embroider. Lace up shoes are recommended. All other materials are provided.
