Wheatear Stitch Step-by-Step Tutorial

1. To start, bring the needle up at the top point of the row of stitches. Create a short straight stitch down the line.

2. Next add the prongs on either side of the straight stitch.  Bring the needle up to the right and slightly away from the center of the straight stitch. Then make a diagonal stitch by bring the needle back down through the bottom of the straight stitch. Repeat on the left.

3. Next, make the looped part of the wheatear stitch by bringing the needle up a stitch’s length away from the bottom of where the three stitches connect. Then slide the needle underneath all three stitches and gently tug the thread so that it lays flay on the fabric. Bring the needle back down in the hole of the stitch just made, to close the loop.

4. Continue adding to the row of wheatear stitches by creating the diagonal stitches on either side of the loop. Then leave a space along the row and fill it in with the loop by sliding the needle underneath the diagonal stitches and previous loop. Continue along the row until you’ve created the desired length.
