How to Embroider: Trellis Stitch - Video and Step by Step Tutorial

How to Embroider the Trellis Stitch

Trellis Stitch

The trellis stitch is a laid work stitch that sits on the front of the fabric and is tacked down with another thread. It is similar to the couching stitch. Use this DIY video and step-by-step tutorial to learn how to embroider the trellis stitch.

What you'll need to create the trellis stitch:

Trellis Stitch Step-by-Step Tutorial

1. Start by creating the lines that go in one direction. I did the horizontal lines first. Come up at the start of the line and bring the needle back down at the end of the line. To create the second line, leave a space and bring the needle up on the same side it came down. Then go across to the other side and bring the needle back down into the fabric. These lines should be parallel and evenly spaced out.

2. Next create the lines that cross over the previous lines. Since I did the horizontal lines first, I did the vertical lines next. These are creates the same as the horizontal lines.

3. Next add the tacking stitch. I used a different colored thread for this, but you don't have to. These should cross diagonally over where the horizontal and vertical lines meet. Start to in the bottom left corner. Bring the needle up just below the horizontal line and to the left of the vertical line. Then bring the needle down across the horizontal line and to the right of the vertical line. This should make a diagonal stitch across the two lines, tacking then down to the fabric.

4. Repeat where all of the horizontal and vertical lines cross. Work across the the trellis from left to right and then up to the next row from right to left and so on until all of the overlapping treads are tacking down.
