How to Embroidery: Running Stitch

Running Stitch

The running stitch creates a dashed line of stitch on the fabric. It can be used as a decorative stitch, to baste fabrics together, and even to gather fabric around a backing or object. Use this DIY video and step-by-step tutorial to learn how to embroider the running stitch.

What you'll need to create the running stitch:

Running Stitch Step-by-Step Tutorial

1. The running stitch is one of the most basic stitches to create a dashed line. To start, bring the needle up through the fabric at the start of the line.

2. Go back down through the fabric a short distance from the first point. Then pop the needle back up through the fabric. Move in and out of the fabric with the needle until you can’t anymore, then gently pull the needle through the fabric. The places the needle was shown is now where the thread is, and the fabric is the space between the stitches.

3. Repeat adding as many stitches as needed.
