Restarting and Changing Colors with the Buttonhole Stitch

Buttonhole Stitch

The buttonhole stitch is a great outlining and edging stitch. As the name suggests, it's often used for buttonholes, but can also be used as a decorative edging, fill, or as part of stumpwork.

What you'll need to create the buttonhole stitch:

Buttonhole Stitch Step-by-Step Tutorial

1. When ending the buttonhole stitch, you make a short stitch around the outer most loop of the buttonhole stitch. This secures the loop in place. When restarting or changing colors, bring the needle up inside the last loop of the buttonhole stitch.

2. Then proceed adding to the buttonhole. This first stitch of the new thread will cover up the short stitch used to end the previous thread and allow for a seamless transition in between colors.
