How to Embroider: Fluffier Cast On Stitch- Video and Step by Step Tutorial

How to embroider the fluffy cast on stitch

Multi-Needle Cast On Stitch

The cast on stitch creates a raised line on the top of the fabric. This embroidery stitch is similar to the bullion knot in that it creates a raised knot on the front of the fabric. The cast on stitch, however, is more rectangular in shape and has a different texture in the stitch. You can also add dimension to this stitch, making it fluffier or more spaced out.

What you'll need to create the multi-needle cast on stitch:

Multi-Needle Cast On Stitch Step-by-Step Tutorial

1. Start by bringing the needle up from the back of the fabric to the front. Choose the length of the cast on stitch you wish to create and bring the needle back down through the fabric. Before pushing to needle all the way through the fabric, bring it back up next to where the thread is coming out of the fabric.

2. With the needle resting in the fabric, insert another needle into the front of the fabric. The more needles used, the bigger the cast on stitch will be. You can also use a cut piece of plastic straw inserted around the needle.

3. Now create the cast on stitch onto the tip of the needles/straw. Do this by crossing the thread over itself in your fingers, then sliding the loop around the needles/straw. Gently tug the loop so that it casts onto the needles/straw.

4. Continue casting stitches onto the needles/straw until the stitches are the length of the space you wish to fill. Make sure the cast on stitches are next to each other and not overlapping.

5. Next, pinch the cast on stitches to hold them in place. Gently remove the additional needle or straw. Then tug the working needle out of the fabric. Pull the threaded needle until the cast on stitches lay flush with the fabric. I find it's helpful to pinch the ridge of the cast on stitch while working this stitch flush with the fabric so that the stitch keeps it's fluffy/rounded shape.

6. To finish this stitch, bring the needle back down through the fabric where the cast on stitch stated. This creates one cast on stitch.
