Detached Chain Leaf Fill Stitch
The detached chain stitch can be used to fill in shapes. Use this DIY video and step-by-step tutorial to learn how to use the detached chain stitch to fill in leaves for a realistic leaf effect.

Detached Chain Leaf Fill Stitch Step-by-Step Tutorial
1. Draw your leaf shape onto fabric stretched in an embroidery hoop. Ensure the leaf has a center stem line.
2. Start by bringing the needle up along the center line of the leaf, about 1/3 of the way from the top point.
3. Hold the thread towards the point and bring the needle back down into the fabric at the same spot. Gently tug the thread so that it creates an open loop.
4. Now bring the needle up through the fabric at the top point of the leaf, inside the loop.
5. Gently tug towards the top of the point so that the loop becomes flush with the fabric. Then make a short stitch around the top point of the loop.
6. Continue adding detached chain stitches along a diagonal to fill in the leaf. Bring the needle up along the center line, just a bit lower than the last stitch. Hold the thread towards one side of the leaf’s outer edge. Then bring the needle back down in the same spot along the center line. Gently tug the thread so it creates an open loop on the front of the fabric. Bring the needle up through the loop along the leaf’s outer edge. Continue to gently tug so that the loop is flush with the fabric.
7. Then make a short stitch along the top outside of the loop. Repeat on the other side of the leaf.
8. Continue alternating from one side to the other, filling the leaf in with detached chain stitches.
