Do you love crafting and watching movies? I know I have trouble keeping my hands still throughout a tv show, let alone an entire movie. This is partially why I haven't seen a movie in theaters in 5+ years. But earlier this year, I saw a TikTok of a group that hosted a craft night at a movie theater. It looked so fun and made me want to go to the moves for craft night! Thankfully my amazing friend and Camp Craftaway co-host Sara also saw this TikTok and investigated how we could host something similar in Seattle. Hence Craft Cinema was born!

The Grand Illusion Cinema is the longest continuously running independent cinema in Seattle, WA. It first opened as The Movie House in 1970. The cinema became the city's first intimate arthouse and showcased foreign and revival films. The Grand Illusion Cinema is now an independent nonprofit that is owned and operated entirely by volunteers. The cinema offers retro style experience in an intimate setting.
About Camp Craftaway
Camp Craftaway is a weekend day camp for crafty adults co-hosted by Sara and Melissa. Camp Craftaway pulls on the nostalgia of summer camp and encourages adults to spend a weekend getting their hands messy with crafts. Each year we have artist teach hands-on workshops. Classes range from paper crafts to plants to embroidery to block printing and more.
We decided to host Craft Cinema as a way to extend the crafting and community experience we love so much about camp.
Camp Craftaway 2025 will be August 1-3, 2025 at the Des Moines Beach Park Event Center.
